ITV The Masked Singer’s Yak ‘revealed’ as star of This Morning

Date:

The Masked Singer has officially returned to ITV with a brand new series, and some fans are already convinced they know the identity of one of the celebrities thanks to a series of clues

Yak made their debut on Sunday evening’s instalment of The Masked Singer, with their true identity already being “sussed out” by home viewers.

The popular ITV singing contest sees famous faces donning elaborate outfits to perform chart hits whilst panellists Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama and Mo Gilligan attempt to decipher their identities.

Shortly after gracing the stage as the seventh series of the beloved programme commenced, Yak presented a series of hints for both the judging panel and audiences to puzzle over regarding their real persona.

This was then accompanied by a performance of Tom Jones’ timeless hit Sex Bomb.

Davina reckoned it might be Busted’s Matt Willis, Jonathan proposed Adrian Edmondson as a possibility, whilst Maya speculated it could be Fatboy Slim and Mo appeared certain it was funnyman Leigh Francis, reports the Mirror.

Home audiences were swift to voice their opinions, with numerous viewers theorising that broadcaster and ex-politician Gyles Brandreth was behind the mask – someone who frequently discusses current affairs on This Morning alongside regular presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard.

One spectator posted on X: “Yak – possibly Gyles Brandreth? ? ? Literally random guess lol Or someone Scottish? ? ,” whilst another commented: “Yak sounds like Gyles Brandreth.”

and a third chimed in: “Yak is making me laugh, what is going on hahaha! Is it Gyles Brandreth?”

Nevertheless, another viewer suspected it might be Benidorm actor Steve Pemberton. In the opening episode, The One Show’s Alex Jones was revealed as Disc Jockey after her rendition of Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club.

Mo suggested it might be radio icon Annie Mac, while Davina suspected Lioness Jill Scott. Guest judge Anne-Marie, who wasn’t present for the performance, guessed “that bird on the cake show,” referring to Dame Mary Berry.

Jonathan thought it was BBC Radio 2’s Sara Cox, and Maya Jama speculated it could be Total Eclipse of the Heart singer Bonnie Tyler. However, all their guesses were off the mark.

Upon her reveal, she told host Joel Dommett and the panel: “I have had a lot of fun. We love this programme, as a family, and I just thought, it would be a lot of fun and that to do it for my children would be wonderful. And it’s the most bizarre experience of my life! Thank you.”

In an emotional tribute, Alex, married to Charlie Thomson, dedicated her stint on the show to her children, saying: “Teddy, Kit and Annie, this was for you. I hope that you’ve loved it.”

The former strictly-come-dancing>Strictly Come Dancing contestant, 48, concluded her time on the show with an unmasked performance of Pink Pony Club, earning a thunderous applause from the studio audience. After her departure, Alex expressed her desire for her performance to inspire her children.

She expressed: “I want them to know that overcoming fear is a good thing. I am not a singer but I gave it a go, and I think that’s the take home for them. I won’t be able to bear it but they will be so excited, hopefully it will be something special they remember when they grow up. They’ll think ‘God, our mother, do you remember when she dressed as a disc jockey and she sang on national television without any sort of voice?'”

In addition to Gargoyle, other celebrities still battling it out in the competition include Red Panda, Can of Worms, Moth, and Sloth. This Sunday night, Monkey Business, Teabag, Toastie, Yak, Arctic Fox, and Conkers are set to make their debut performances.

This follows the revelation of Anne-Marie as Goldfish, who had been performing as the lead vocalist of a band named No Trout, marking a first for the show. After delivering renditions of Bruno Mars and Rose hit APT, the judges successfully identified the singer.

Upon her unmasking, the starlet shared: “When I was at school, I had a very short attention span! I’m used to the voice just going that way [in front of me] but in the thing, it was like ‘Oh, that’s what I sound like!” She then treated the studio audience to her first unmasked performance of her iconic track 2002, which famously name-drops music legends like Britney Spears, Jay-Z and NSYNC.

The Masked Singer and This Morning are both on ITV1 and ITVX
