Manchester United have named Ruben Amorim’s replacement with the Portuguese manager sacked after his bombshell press conference following a draw with Leeds
Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim, following his bombshell press conference after a 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday.
Amorim, 40, lasted 14 months at the helm of the Red Devils, but the decision came to sack him after a breakdown in relations between himself and the boardroom. In a statement the club confirmed that Amorim has left his role as head coach.
And the Red Devils added Darren Fletcher will be in control of the team for their trip to Burnley on Wednesday evening. The statement said: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
The Athletic add that Fletcher will take over an interim basis.
Their report adds the decision was made by the club’s leadership team, including chief executive Omar Berada and director of football Jason Wilcox, following a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.
Tensions were ramped up after the draw at Elland Road when Amorim launched a bizarre rant saying he considered himself the “manager” of United rather than the “head coach.”
He fumed: “I just want to say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United – not the head coach.
“That’s going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That’s the deal, that’s my job.
“I know my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, is not (Antonio) Conte and is not (Jose) Mourinho. But I am the manager of Manchester United and it is going to be like this for 18 months, or (until) when the board decides to change.”
