New research from Wickes reveals nearly three quarters (72%) of Brits are planning a flurry of new home improvements for the year ahead, making 2026 the year of home glow-ups. According to the study, the most-wanted upgrades include a stylish new bathroom (31%), kitchen revamp (23%), storage enhancement (17%), a garden transformation (17%) and making homes more energy-efficient (15%).

Wickes Design consultant Sarah-Jayne Thorne has provided five top tips for home renovations, both big and small:

1. “Based on the research findings, it’s clear kitchens (23%) and bathrooms (31%) are the priority and most widely in need of modernisation. If you’re unsure where to start, try small changes like re-painting tired kitchen units or retiling sections, as these can really impact the look and feel of a space.
2. With 72% of homeowners rejecting the grey, cream and off-white colour trend, 2026 is all about colour! Injecting bold colours and experimenting with popular hues such as olive green, teal, duck egg blue, sage or sunshine yellow can instantly revive interiors and help create a more personalised look. 3. Over a third (36%) are looking to make their living space more functional. Consider reconfiguring for an open-plan kitchen-diner-living hub to make the home work harder. If possible, maximise your home by extending the outdoor living area. This effectively creates an extra “room,” providing an ideal space for socialising and relaxation.
4. With 92% of Brits seeking quick, affordable ways to make their homes feel new again, an efficient way to do this is to look at storage space. Removing clutter from work tops can really help a space to feel fresh again.
5. Finally, it’s also important to look beyond aesthetics with 15% looking to embrace smart and energy-efficient upgrades such as smart thermostats and lighting offering both comfort and long-term savings.”
