The Brit took home his first ever Golden Globe in Los Angeles on Monday night for his masterclass of a performance in the smash hit, which he wrote and also starred in
British acting great Stephen Graham OBE has taken home his first ever Golden Globe win.
After a career spanning decades of gritty performances., the Kirkby-born star claimed his first-time gong for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for his starring role in the Netflix mega-hit Adolescence.
The Netflix limited series is in the middle of a victory lap of Hollywood on Monday night, with the British-produced programme penned by Graham, who also starred in the show.
The Line of Duty star took to the stage looking genuinely stunned as he was handed the award in the ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hilton in Los Angeles. He looked down at the trophy, grasped in his hands, and said one word to sum up his thoughts to the packed ballroom – a Jamaican expletive that expressed his shock at the win.
The crowd erupted as the actor, writer and show creator quickly gathered himself, congratulating his fellow nominees and paying tribute to the cast and crew who helped turn Adolescence into one of Netflix’s biggest British hits.
But it was Graham’s emotional nod to his family that really stopped the room.
Turning to his wife, he said simply: “You saved my life.”
Then, addressing his children, he added: “To my two beautiful kids, Grace and Alfie — I love you to the moon and back forever.”
Despite the historic win, Graham later joked that his kids weren’t overly impressed by the shiny new trophy.
Apparently, they were far more excited by one thing: their dad meeting Snoop Dogg.
Speaking backstage to Associated Press, the usually calm actor admitted he was completely star-struck after bumping into the rap icon.
“He shook my hand, and he looked me right in the eyes — couldn’t see his eyes because he had his glasses on — and said, ‘You’re a mother***** gangster,’*” Graham said. “My life is complete.”
So far, Adolescence has absolutely cleaned up for the Brits.
Erin Doherty won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, while teen sensation Owen Cooper made history earlier in the night by becoming the youngest Golden Globe winner ever. Adolescence also bagged the award for Best Limited Series.
