At least 2,000 people have died in the protests and others have been scheduled for executions as outlets reported that videos showed body bags lined up at morgues in the capital
United States President Donald Trump has cautioned Iran that “very strong action” will be taken if the nation proceeds with executing demonstrators.
“We will take very strong action. If they do such a thing, we will take very strong action,” Trump informed CBS news presenter Tony Dokoupil during an interview broadcast on Tuesday evening, January 13, as the Middle Eastern nation prepares mass executions, reports the Mirror..
Demonstrations have broken out across Iran’s streets in a bid to topple the Mullah regime that has governed with brutal authority since 1979, the Mirror has previously reported.
Demonstrators have continued to gather despite being confronted by armed forces wielding firearms.
At least 2,000 individuals have perished in the demonstrations, with others facing scheduled executions as reports emerged showing footage of body bags queued at mortuaries in the capital.
“We don’t want to see what’s happening in Iran happen. And you know, if they want to have protests, that’s one thing, when they start killing thousands of people, and now you’re telling me about hanging – we’ll see how that works out for them. It’s not going to work out good,” Trump stated.
A young clothing retailer, 26 year old Erfan Soltani, is set to become the first to face execution in Iran’s savage suppression of demonstrators.
He was detained at his residence in Fardis, central Iran, following allegations of participating in the anti-government demonstrations last week, according to human rights organisations.
It has been reported that the young father was granted merely 10 minutes with his relatives before his scheduled hanging on Wednesday. In a stern warning to Iranian officials, Trump posted on social media on Tuesday that they will “pay a big price” for any acts of violence.
The US president also sent a message of hope to the citizens of Iran, stating that “HELP IS ON ITS WAY.”
During an interview with CBS, Trump revealed that “there’s a lot of help on the way” for the people of Iran. This aid is set to come in “different forms”, including economic support, as reported by CBS.
He referenced the U.S. airstrikes from last year which targeted three of Iran’s nuclear facilities, but refrained from providing further details.
Iran has responded by declaring that the US would be considered a “legitimate target” if such strikes were to proceed.
