Viewers have been left stunned that Traitor Stephen didn’t get caught out after making another blunder
BBC The Traitors viewers are claiming that Stephen may have ‘slipped up’ in a fleeting scene that was easy to miss.
Wednesday night’s (January 14) episode proved to be amongst the most gripping instalments yet of Claudia Winkleman’s series. Viewers had been left waiting a full week to discover the outcome of Matt’s encounter with traitors Stephen and Rachel.
With both traitors concealing their identities whilst remaining in a confessions booth, Matt requested they eliminate Jessie, bypass the next murder, and recruit him into their ranks in the turret.
Upon hearing Rachel and Stephen accept his proposal, Matt declared: “We have a new recruit. I wanted to be a traitor from the very beginning, so keep my cloak warm… Obviously I don’t know what I’m walking into, they could screw me over here. If you can’t beat them, join them.”
Next to face the traitors was Harriet, who disclosed she’s a crime novelist and former criminal barrister. When asked whom they’d prefer to recruit, Harriet was told it would be either herself, Jessie or Sam, reports the Manchester Evening News.
“I think this answer is not worth the paper it was written on. If my voice is shaking it not through nerves, but through anger you have taken me for such a fool,” Harriet responded.
In a dramatic turn, Harriet declared she’s convinced Rachel is a traitor and won’t give up until she exposes her. Stephen reassured Rachel he would support her and scribbled down that he wouldn’t shield her and to ‘take her’ when Harriet questioned whether he’d sacrifice her.
Harriet then delivered a chilling warning in another jaw-dropping moment: “I bet you killed me when you had the chance.”
Come breakfast time, Harriet revealed her true profession to the remaining faithfuls before confronting Rachel once more, this time publicly. This seemed to ignite internal warfare within the castle as players found themselves split over whose version of events to believe.
Fearing Harriet had rumbled him, Stephen cornered her in the kitchen seeking comfort. Yet Stephen made reference to her earlier caution about individuals shielding Rachel during the roundtable discussion.
Viewers glued to their screens at home flocked to X, formerly Twitter, to highlight that Stephen had muddled the timeline and inadvertently referenced their private conversation from the church.
One person posted: “Did Stephen just tell Harriet what she said about protecting Rachel #TheTraitors.”
Another chimed in: “Has Stephen just done it again? Harriet said about protecting Rachel last night, not this morning! #TheTraitors.”

A different viewer observed: “Ooops. I think Stephen might have just dropped his camouflage… He said to Harriet, ‘you said at the table to watch out for people protecting Rachel’. Oh Stephen. She didn’t say that at the table. SHE SAID IT AT THE CONFESSIONAL. #Traitors #TheTraitors.”
Another remarked: “How Stephen has now got away scot free I will never know #TheTraitors #TheTraitorsUK.”
While a different fan questioned: “No but how has Stephen escaped this like.”
This isn’t the first time Stephen has slipped up. During a previous roundtable, he accidentally let slip that he knew players had been targeted by the Traitors the night before.
The Traitors is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
