Ruben Amorim was ready to quit Manchester United before his brutal sacking earlier this month.

Amorim was sacked by the Red Devils following him bombshell press conference rant after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United – ending his 14-month reign at Old Trafford. And Michael Carrick has been installed as interim boss until the end of the season.

However, according to The Sun, Amorim was ready to walk away from the Red Devils, despite his defiant comments in his final press conference before he was axed. The report claims Amorim had told close friends he was going to resign.

Amorim’s mind was changed after talking to his agent, Raul Costa, who insisted that the club should either back him or sack him. If he had walked, Amorim would have left without a penny in compensation.

It adds, Costa felt the end was near for Amorim and it was the club’s decision then they should pay up the rest of the former Sporting Lisbon manager’s contract.

As a result of his sacking, Amorim was handed a hefty pay-off in the region of around £12m.

In his final press conference, he said: “I just want to say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United – not the head coach. That’s going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That’s the deal, that’s my job.

“I know my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, is not (Antonio) Conte and is not (Jose) Mourinho.

“But I am the manager of Manchester United and it is going to be like this for 18 months, or (until) when the board decides to change.”

Amorim’s pay-off means the Red Devils’ compensation bill for managers sacked since Sir Alex Ferguson has now reached the £100m mark.

The Carrick era will kick off on Saturday as the Red Devils clash with bitter rivals Manchester City – with both sides desperate for a win in the English top flight.
