Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has been accused of sexual assault after two women came forward – with one former female employee saying she felt like ‘a slave’
Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has spoken out to deny all allegations made against him made by two former female employees.
The allegations emerged earlier this week as the the women alleged they were subjected to “inappropriate touching, insults and humiliation… in an atmosphere of control and constant harassment” by the renowned musician. The accusers, one a domestic worker and the other a physical therapist, claim the assaults took place in 2021 while they were employed at Iglesias’ residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.
Now, Iglesias has taken to social media to deny all allegations made against him. Taking to Instagram, Iglesias said: “I deny having abused, coerced, or disrespected any woman. These accusations are absolutely false and deeply sadden me.”
In his Instagram statement, Iglesias continued: “It is with profound sadness that I respond to the accusations made by two people who previously worked for me.
He added: “I have never felt such malice, but I still have the strength to let people know the whole truth and defend my dignity against such a serious accusation.”
The singer then thanked the “so many dear people who have sent me messages of affection and loyalty”, and added: “I have found great comfort in them.”
The alleged assaults came to light at the end of a three-year joint investigation by the Spanish news site elDiario.es and the Spanish-language TV network Univision Noticias, which collected testimonies from 15 former employees who worked for the 82-year-old singer between the late 1990s and 2023, The Guardian reports.
One of the women said that Iglesias, who was 77 at the time, would often call her to his room at the end of the working day and assault her. “He used me almost every night,” she told elDiario.es and Univision Noticias. “I felt like an object, like a slave.”
The report from Univision Noticias added: “The two women who reported sexual assault were interviewed repeatedly over more than a year and their accounts remained consistent throughout. Their statements are supported by extensive documentary evidence, such as photographs, call logs, WhatsApp messages, visas, medical reports and other documents.”
No criminal charges have been announced at this stage. Iglesias has not publicly commented on the allegations, and the accusations remain unproven.
