Super-strong Hubert Burrell, 51, faced rivals from a string of other trades in a battle of strength and endurance to find the UK’s strongest tradesman, seeing off scaffolders and joiners

A plasterer crowned Britain’s “Toughest Tradie” reckons his profession boasts the hardest grafters after beating joiners, plumbers and scaffolders to the title.

Hubert Burrell, 51, faced rivals from a string of other trades in a battle of strength and endurance to find the UK’s strongest tradesman.

He smashed the five x 10 metres safety sprint, including getting into protective gear between each dash, and clung on for two minutes in hang tough, to earn his bragging rights and a £1,000 prize. He also unleashed a top score in the hammer slam.

While the strongman also has brains as well as brawn, mastering the measure up challenge – by pulling a blank tape measure as close as possible to 1.16m – in the competition organised by Trojan workwear.

And Hubert, from Manchester, identified worksite safety red flags in the hazard hunt, beating a painter and decorator, a scaffolder and two plumbers in his home city.

The champion reckons it’s no surprise that someone from his trade romped to victory. He said: “Plasterers are definitely the toughest tradespeople.

“We graft all day, often lifting three or four 25kg bags of plaster up flights of stairs, moving furniture, hacking off the wall to reach the brick, then render and skim. Even in the middle of winter, we’re sweating because it’s non-stop.”

Hubert added: “My mates have been calling me a lucky sod for winning, but I keep myself fit, and this competition win has made my year.”

A spokesman for Trojan said: “Super-strong Hubert Burrell flew through the five challenges in record time to take first place in the battle of the blue collars.”

The workwear firm based in Hull, East Yorks, has launched a new line of clothing with raised waistbands and shirt grips to tackle the dreaded builder’s bum.

Hubert said: “The new workwear’s spot on – comfortable, solid, and it actually stays put. No more worrying about the old builder’s bum making an appearance when I’m reaching or lifting!”
