100 car pile-up chaos as snow storm slams into US leaving busy road gridlocked

Date:

The multi-vehicle pile-up happened on Interstate 196 in Michigan after snowfall created chaos for drivers in the United States

More than 100 vehicles were involved in a massive pile-up triggered by heavy snowfall.

The motors skidded off the carriageway as blizzard conditions wreaked havoc for motorists across the United States.

The enormous multi-car crash occurred on Monday, January 19 in Michigan following heavy snow which blanketed the state, reports the Mirror..

The massive pile-up forced Michigan State Police to shut the Interstate 196 on Monday morning, just southwest of Grand Rapids.

Over 30 lorries were deployed as part of the clear-up operation, with police confirming multiple injuries but no fatalities.

Motorist Pedro Mata Jr. described how the vehicles ahead were barely visible as snow whipped across the carriageway whilst he was travelling at 20-25 mph before the smash.

He managed to bring his pickup to a safe stop, but then chose to move his vehicle off the road into the central reservation to avoid being struck from behind.

Mata said: “It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you. I saw what was in front of me. I couldn’t see what was behind me exactly.”

Weather warnings have been issued nationwide as the winter storm continues to cause chaos.

There’s potential for storms across multiple states beginning in northern Minnesota and extending south and east into Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Weather experts cautioned that temperatures would plummet below freezing overnight on Monday throughout much of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s department in Michigan said they had fielded numerous calls regarding multiple collisions, with many motors sliding off the carriageway.

Motorists were left marooned, with bus services ferrying them to Hudsonville High School where they could ring for assistance. The road is expected to remain closed for several hours whilst a clear-up takes place.

Over a dozen lorries have been dispatched by just one of the firms assisting with the operation, Grand Valley Towing. Several recovery companies are working in tandem to clear the wreckage from the pile-up.

The manager of Grand Valley said: “We’re trying to get as many vehicles out of there as quickly as possible, so we can get the road opened back up.”
