Trump calls off tariffs as ‘framework of future deal’ over Greenland reached

Donald Trump says he and the Secretary General of NATO have “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland,” following a meeting in Switzerland.

Trump ruled out taking Greenland, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, by force during an extraordinary speech at the World Economic Forum, in Davos on Wednesday (January 21), but added America “would remember” if NATO refused to do a deal.

Speaking on his Truth Social platform, the President confirmed “a very productive meeting” had taken place between him and Mark Rutte on the matter.

“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” he posted.

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.

“Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump has repeatedly antagonised European allies with his campaign to acquire Greenland, taking to social media on Saturday (January 17) to announce that he would apply a 10 per cent tariff on “any and all goods” sent to the US from February 1 if a deal wasn’t reached soon.

He also added that this tax would increase to 25 per cent from the beginning of June if a deal for America to acquire Greenland wasn’t reached by that date.

Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark have continued to rebuff Trump’s advances, with thousands across major cities protesting America’s interest last week.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had also clashed heads with the President, stating during Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions once more that he “will not yield” on the future of Greenland “under threats of tariffs”.

During his Davos speech, Trump claimed Europe was “unrecognisable” and that NATO was not able to secure Greenland but that the U.S. was the “only country” capable of doing so.
