Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, Co Clare was declared safe after an envelope believed to contain a powder substance was delivered to the site on Wednesday, January 21
Donald Trump’s Irish golf resort has been declared safe after a suspicious package was discovered prompting a police cordon to be put in place and security officials to scramble to the prestigious site.
The alert was raised at Trump ‘s Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg, Co Clare. It has since been lifted on Wednesday, January 21 after an envelope believed to contain a powder substance was delivered to the site, The Mirror reports.
A cordon was put in place at the resort over the incident and the Irish police service An Garda Siochana and the Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to the incident.
“The package was subsequently deemed safe and the cordon has been lifted,” a Garda spokesperson said. “Investigations are ongoing.”
The US president’s son, Eric Trump, stayed at the hotel after landing in Dublin on Tuesday, January 20. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump posted an aerial view of the Doonbeg site. He highlighted that it will be the venue of the Irish Golf Open later this year.
The Irish Mirror reported that the 42-year-old businessman left Doonbeg early on Wednesday morning and flew to Davos in Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum.
The five-star hotel was previously the target of a bomb threat, which led to a police investigation. The hotel was not evacuated during the incident. It is currently closed for winter at the time. Gardai searched the site, but found nothing suspicious.
The US president and Eric Trump are currently in Davos, Switzerland, attending the World Economic Forum.
The summit, taking place from 19 to 23 January, is being held under the banner of “A Spirit of Dialogue”.
Trump kicked off his address at the forum by expressing his pleasure at being back among friends and a “few enemies”.
He voiced his concerns about Europe’s trajectory, stating: “Europe is not going in the right way,” but adding: “I love Europe, I want to see it do good but it’s not going in the right direction.”
His comments at Davos come hot on the heels of threats to impose tariffs on eight European nations that opposed his bid to acquire Greenland.
He continued by declaring his intention to initiate “seeking immediate negotiations to acquire Greenland”.
Asserting that only the US could ensure its protection, he said: “It’s the US alone that can protect it so it’s good and safe for Europe,” and added: “And that’s the reason I’m seeking the immediate negotiations for the acquisition of Greenland by the US.”
He assured that such a move would not undermine NATO, but rather strengthen the alliance, adding: “The US has been ungracefully treated by NATO. You wouldn’t have NATO if I didn’t get involved in my first term.”‘
