A wrestling legend and father of a WCW star has sadly passed away at the age of 81 as tributes have been paid.
Bobby Duncum Sr battled wrestling icons such as Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund during a huge career that saw his son follow in his footsteps.
Similar to many professional wrestlers, Duncum Sr transitioned into wrestling after a short spell in the NFL. He was a graduate of West Texas State University, which produced the late legendary WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes.
Former WWE star and commenter John “Bradshaw” Layfield paid tribute to Duncum Sr after revealing how he heartbreakingly read a eulogy at his son’s funeral.
Bobby Duncum Jr, who wrestled with huge stars in WCW and ECW, sadly passed away at the age of 34 in 2000.
Layfield said: “Bobby Jr and I were roommates when we started, I did his eulogy when he unfortunately passed.
“Just a great family. Mr Duncum was always so kind, just a good guy to be around-he had this aura about him, was cool to be in his presence. RIP”
In a statement, WWE paid tribute to the wrestling legend who had many battles with some of the companies biggest stars.
It read: “WWE is saddened to learn that Bobby Duncum Sr. has passed away.
“One of the most feared villains of the territories, the rugged cowboy from Austin, Texas, was as tough as they came. A graduate of West Texas State University, the same institution that produced Dusty Rhodes, The Funk Brothers and many other icons, Duncum was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1967 NFL Draft and played four pro games in 1968.
“Carrying on the great tradition of Texas football stars turned pro wrestlers, Duncum entered the ring and became infamous for his wild street fights and brutal battles against WWE Legends like Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund. He was also a member of the iconic Heenan Family, led by WWE Hall of Famer Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, in the AWA.
“WWE extends its condolences to Duncum Sr.’s family, friends and fans.”
