A Premier League legend was involved in one of the most awkward interviews ever as he was questioned by a clueless reporter who had no idea who he was
Kieron Dyer has been involved in some awkward situations during his career, but the former Premier League star’s interview with a clueless reporter tops the lot.
Dyer, who celebrates his 47th birthday today (Monday), played 225 times in the top-flight for Newcastle, West Ham and QPR, but it was at his hometown Ipswich Town where he earned his stripes in the second-tier.
At the time when Dyer’s career was blossoming, a programme called Under The Moon aired on Channel 4. During one episode in 1996, they asked the public what they thought about Ipswich’s rivalry with Norwich City.
An interviewer was sent out on the road, clearly unaware of the Tractor Boys’ young guns, as he stopped Dyer on the street to get his opinion. Having no idea that the winger would later play in the fixture.
Stopped whilst walking through town with a friend, the interviewer said: “Can I ask you about Ipswich Town Football Club? Are you a supporter?”
Dyer looked shocked while his pal burst out laughing before he eventually replied: “I’m an actual player.”
The interviewer then appeared more stunned that Dyer as he asked: “Are you?” To which a confused Dyer replied: “Yeah…”
Seemingly thinking Dyer was joking, the interviewer awkwardly continued to question him like he was a fan, saying: “We’re talking to people about the rivalry with Norwich. Is that something you feel at all?”
Dyer appeared taken aback by the whole conversation but answered: “Yeah, it’s a big thing for all the players that we win against Norwich for the supporters. It’s a real passionate affair. It’s everything to the fans that we win.”
The interviewer continued to poke at Dyer’s story as he asked: “So what level are you playing at?”
Dyer replied: “Professional. In the first team.” The future England international then said his name when cued before walking off.
The winger went on to play three times against Norwich during his time at Ipswich. Making his first appearance against their arch rivals as a late substitute in a 2-0 win a year after the interview was filmed.
Dyer left his hometown club in July 1999 to join Newcastle for a fee of £6million – a club record sale for Ipswich at the time.
The 33-time England international would return to Portman Road on loan from West Ham in 2011 but made just four Championship appearances.
