Manchester United are considering permanent outgoings as well as incomings plus the status of loan deals with the January transfer window nearly upon us
Manchester United are gearing up for a pivotal month as the January transfer window looms.
Ruben Amorim’s squad has shown signs of improvement in recent months, with the club aiming to secure a spot in Europe next season and having climbed up to sixth in the Premier League table. The Red Devils will be looking to bolster their ambitions with a victory over Wolves at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The visitors are yet to claim their first win of the season, but United’s focus will be on narrowing the three-point gap to fourth-placed Liverpool. While much attention has been given to potential new arrivals, United could also boost their transfer kitty through player sales. Here’s an in-depth look at all the latest news from Old Trafford.
Hojlund’s future
Manchester United’s loanee striker Rasmus Hojlund has been catching the eye of Napoli boss Antonio Conte.
After two hugely disappointing seasons at Old Trafford, the flop joined the Italian champions, who could fork out up to £44m to secure him on a permanent basis if Ruben Amorim decides he is surplus to requirements in the summer.
The young forward had a tough time in a United jersey, with his hefty £72m price tag only adding to the pressure. However, after scoring twice in Napoli’s victory over Cremonese on Sunday, Hojlund has earned praise from Conte.
“Hojlund is a player who is very young, he’s still only 22-years-old, and can improve a great deal,” Conte commented.
“Since he first joined us, he has already progressed to become a dominant player in that role, because he’s starting to understand the right positions to take, how to defend the ball, when to come towards it or back off.”
Conte went on to say: “He is really well connected with the team. In my style of football, the strikers have a very important and special role in the overall approach, and he has huge margin for further improvement.”
Marcus Rashford update
Marcus Rashford is another forward thriving during a loan stint away from Manchester United, this time at Barcelona.
The forward has chalked up 18 goal contributions in 24 appearances for Hansi Flick’s team, reports the Mirror.
The Catalan giants have the option to make Rashford’s move permanent for £26million. While this would be a bargain considering Rashford’s current form, the England international might need to make some concessions to seal the deal.
Spanish publication Sport suggests Rashford is open to discussing a wage cut to fit within the club’s salary cap, given Barcelona’s well-known financial troubles. It’s reported Flick is keen to retain Rashford beyond this season.
Meanwhile, Rashford has expressed his desire to stay put. The Spanish club are reportedly confident the 28-year-old will turn down offers from other teams to remain a part of Flick’s squad.
His contract with United is due to run until 2028. However, Rashford was loaned out to Aston Villa last January before being permitted to move to Barcelona in the summer.
