Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly shared a personal update on Tuesday
An Emmerdale icon has made a devastating admission as she opened up on “tragic circumstances”.
49-year-old actress Beth Cordingly, who plays Ruby Miligan on the ITV soap, took to Instagram on Tuesday (December 30) to reflect on her Christmas.
She shared footage of herself and her partner, former Dales actor Ian Kelsey, as they went cold water swimming on the Brighton coastline.
“This was (part of) our Christmas. When in Brighton… We go in every year. It’s a tradition,” the caption began.
Opening up about a tragic event that previously took place, Beth admitted: “But we didn’t go in very far this year because it was rough. And I didn’t want to post this at the time because of the absolutely tragic circumstances where some people lost their lives swimming in Devon on Christmas Day.

“It’s devastating beyond words how quickly joy and fun can change to disaster and my heart and thoughts are with their families and friends. Life is so precious.”
The star went on: “To anyone who found Christmas tricky this year, for whatever reason, it’s very difficult but it’s normal. I hope you were ok. And if it’s any consolation to anyone dreading, ‘WHATDOIDOFORNEWYEAR????’… we still have no idea. It’ll be January soon and we can all breathe. Lots of love, Beth.”
Fans quickly took to the comments section to share their well wishes, with one person writing: “Ooh well done, it must have been freezing! Happy New Year to you both!”
Another added: “I bet it was freezing, it looks like fun though. Hope you had a great Christmas,” while a third person said: “You’re very brave to go into that freezing sea. Happy New Year to you both.”
A fourth fan echoed the sentiment, saying: “Hope you both had a lovely Christmas and have a lovely New Year. All the best for 2026.”
It’s been a busy year in the Dales for Beth’s character Ruby after she killed her abusive father, Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day), back in January.
Killer John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) helped to bury the body in a location that was only recently shared following the army medic’s own crimes being exposed.
Shortly after Nate Robinson’s (Jurell Carter) body was pulled out of the lake in June, Ruby secretly went to the police station and confessed to killing her dad, as she believed that it was his remains that had been found.
Ruby was eventually exonerated, with the character facing a lot less drama in recent months. Following a short break away from the village a few weeks ago, Ruby started up a new business venture, after accidentally importing too much wine from overseas.
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 at 7.30pm and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX
