Brrrrrrits should be braced for some more horrendously chilly weather this week as it plunges below freezing and snow is dumped across the country in monster deluges
Three “snow bombs” are set to strike Britain this week. A 1,000 mile-wide “Polar Express” freeze across the nation is expected to see temperatures plunge to -15C lows – colder than the Arctic.
The RAC is braced for a blitz of breakdowns today (Mon) with up to 8,000 callouts as cars struggle to start after being left idle over the festive period. Some 2,000 gritters, deicing trains and airport snowploughs are on standby to tackle the travel mayhem. A Met Office forecaster said: “Monday has snow showers, with a mix of rain, sleet and snow into Wednesday.
“Atlantic frontal systems follow, with snow especially in central, northern and eastern, perhaps giving significant accumulations in places. A continuation of low pressure systems interspersed with drier interludes is favoured into the next week.”
And the “snow bombs” are set to dump up to four inches of the white stuff from Wednesday through to Sunday (11th).
The South, Midlands and North are all at risk.
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “With snow lying, the -12.6C coldest temperature of winter so far is certainly one to watch in coming nights.”
Meanwhile, there will be showers and snow today (Mon) and tomorrow (Tues) in eastern and western parts.
And -15C lows are expected in the North, colder than -11C nights in Hammerfest, Norway, 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
The South will also see bone-chilling temperatures of -10C.
And there will be shivering 1-4C daytime highs until Friday, which will feel like -4C to 0C in biting windchill.
Forecasters reckon the cold polar air will last into next week with further snow due after the weekend.
Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said: “Atlantic weather systems will move cold air over the UK through the week, giving snow potential.
“With temperatures struggling to get above freezing, wrap up warm.”
