A former England footballer begged a jaw-dropping WWE diva, who he thought was “hotter than Britney Spears”, for her phone number when they met backstage
A former England footballer once begged a WWE diva he thought was “hotter than Britney Spears” for her phone number when they met backstage.
Kieron Dyer was at the then Metro Radio Arena for an episode of SmackDown in 2004 alongside Jermaine Jenas and Titus Bramble, when the trio all turned out for Newcastle United. And after seeing one legendary WWE performer, the then-Three Lions midfielder tried to shoot his shot.
Like the majority of WWE fans in 2004, Dyer, who turned 47 last Monday (December 27), had fallen under the spell of Torrie Wilson – the stunning blonde bombshell that wowed in Vince McMahon’s promotion and on the front cover of lad’s mags – and even Playboy – at the time.
And her striking looks were even too much for Dyer, with BBC Two cameras following him around backstage. According to the Wrestling Observer newsletter, footage showed him getting flustered around Torrie.
Dyer even said she was hotter than pop star Britney Spears, but when he asked for her number he got “blown off” and then tried to play it off like he was just joking.
The report joked “he basically came off totally starstruck”. With the author adding: “I mean, I get it.”
Dyer had the chance to catch his new crush in action on the show as she defeated fellow diva Eva Marie on a stacked card that also featured greats such as Eddie Guerrero, John Cena and Rey Mysterio.
At the time, Torrie was married to fellow wrestler Billy Kidman, real name Peter Gruner, after a lavish ceremony in 2003 before divorcing in 2008, after Torrie had hung up her wrestling boots. She would marry Justin Tupper in 2019.
The fitness model went from a small-town Idaho girl to a worldwide superstar first with WWE rival WCW and then working for McMahon.
Torrie bared all for FHM and Playboy as she became a household name. In May 2003 she took part in a memorable feud with WWE rival Nidia.
Nidia, accompanied by her onscreen boyfriend Jamie Noble, made trips to The Playboy Mansion to complain to Hugh Hefner over his choice of Torrie as his cover star.
And as part of a feud with Sable – now the wife of WWE and MMA icon Brock Lesnar – both Torrie and the former Playmate featured together in a Playboy March 2004 issue.
Torrie failed to ever win the WWE Women’s Championship. However, she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019, when she famously shared a joke with her adoring fans.
She said: “I just want to thank you for letting me be, just even a small part of your life. And for many of you guys, a part of your puberty. Like, I’ve heard that a lot.”
A tribute at the time read: “Her athleticism and penchant for entertainment made her a great fit for WWE during one of the sports-entertainment industry’s biggest eras.”
