A shooting outside a Mormon Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, has left two people dead and at least six more injured, with three in critical condition. Suspects remain outstanding

A gunman has opened fire outside a Mormon church in Salt Lake City, Utah, leaving two people dead and several others wounded.

The attack occurred in the car park of a meetinghouse belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormon church, on Wednesday, January 8, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Reports suggest a funeral service was underway inside the building at the time of the incident.

Police have confirmed that no suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Footage from the scene revealed numerous emergency vehicles with flashing lights responding to the tragedy.

A Salt Lake City Police spokesman stated: “We are on scene of a shooting at 660 N. Redwood Road. two people were killed and at least six more have been injured with at least three of those in critical condition.

“The suspects are still outstanding, but our officers have obtained solid leads and are working to locate those involved. Redwood Road is closed in both directions from 500 N to 700 N. Anyone with information should call 801-799-3000.”

FBI Salt Lake City confirmed in a post on X: “We are aware of the incident in Salt Lake City and offering assistance to our law enforcement partners.”

The Church of Latter-day Saints said in a statement on social media: “We are aware of a serious incident that occurred outside a Church meetinghouse at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City tonight as a memorial service was being held in the chapel.

“The Church is cooperating with law enforcement and is grateful for the efforts of first responders. Until more information is available, all questions about this incident are being directed to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

“We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind.”
