Arsenal news: £35m transfer battle for wonderkid as Mikel Arteta to get windfall

Date:

Arsenal are set to be in line for a transfer windfall this January, as a former defender could be set to leave his current club, while the Gunners are also looking to the future and a big move

The Premier League title race is starting to look like a foregone conclusion and Arsenal will be determined to extend their lead when they face reigning champions Liverpool on Thursday night.

The Gunners now have a five-point lead and a game-in-hand over second-placed Manchester City and third placed Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta is seeing his injury issues ease as he faces a Liverpool side who are feeling the impact of key absences themselves.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are scouring the market for some possible opportunities to strengthen the squad over the January transfer window. Here’s all the latest news from the Emirates.

Arsenal reignite interest in Jeremy Jacquet

During the summer transfer window, Arsenal were on the hunt for value in their defence, eventually securing Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie.

However, they also expressed interest in Rennes’ young talent Jeremy Jacquet as a future prospect, reports the Mirror.

A few months after initial interest, TEAMtalk reveals Arsenal are still in the running for the 20-year-old’s signature, potentially setting up a fierce battle. Rivals Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid are also said to be interested in the young star.

Jacquet has been a consistent presence for Rennes in Ligue 1 this season, with the right-footed centre-back clocking up 16 league appearances so far.

It’s no wonder that his club swiftly offered him a new contract in May 2025, which he promptly signed, extending his stay until 2029.

It’s said that an offer worth between £25m and £35m could be enough to prise him away from Rennes.

Arsenal transfer windfall

Arsenal could be in line for a transfer windfall this January, as Corriere dello Sport reports that former defender Nuno Tavares could leave Lazio.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a possible exit, just a few months on from making the permanent move to the Italian side last summer.

Tavares, who spent four years at the Emirates Stadium after signing from Benfica as a promising prospect, struggled to impress Arteta. Following loan spells at Marseille and Nottingham Forest, as well as a year-long stint at Lazio, the Italian club decided to make his move permanent.

Now, with a potential departure from Serie A looming, Arsenal could be set for a significant cash boost. Reports suggest the Gunners included a 25% sell-on clause in his deal when he was sold, which could provide a substantial addition to their transfer funds.

Arsenal have previously faced criticism for failing to secure high transfer fees when selling players, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still holding the record for the club’s highest sale.

However, after a summer spending spree of around £250m, any additional income could assist the club in balancing their books.
