‘Pure cinematic adrenaline and a reminder of why movies are meant to be experienced on the big screen’
A sequel that kept fans waiting three decades for its arrival has been praised as ‘worth the wait’ by cinema enthusiasts, and it’s broadcasting on Channel 4 tonight.
Top Gun: Maverick continues from the legendary Top Gun film, and after more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s elite aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) remains in his element, pushing boundaries as a daring test pilot whilst avoiding the promotion that would see him grounded.
Instructing a group of graduates for a specialist mission, Maverick must face the shadows of his past and his greatest anxieties, leading to an operation that requires the ultimate sacrifice from those who volunteer to undertake it.
The cast also features Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer in his final acting role, reports the Mirror.
Released in 2022, enthusiasts were keen to experience the follow-up to the original, and many weren’t let down as they dubbed it the ‘finest sequel’ and ‘worth the wait’.
On review platform Rotten Tomatoes, the picture has received glowing critiques, with one five-star review stating: “My favourite movie of 2022. The film is packed with breathtaking aerial cinematography that makes you feel like you’re right in the cockpit.
“The practical flight sequences are jaw-dropping, immersive, and unlike anything seen in modern action films. Top Gun Maverick is pure cinematic adrenaline and a reminder of why movies are meant to be experienced on the big screen.”
One thrilled viewer posted: “The best sequel and best movie I have ever seen it has the best story. I have ever seen, and you don’t really have to be a fan of the first to like it, and I would recommend it to anyone.”
Another glowing review read: “Seen it like 6 times. 10/10. Intriguing, action, great storyline. Keeps you on your toes. Highly recommend,”.
A fourth film buff said: “The film that saved cinema. Truly one of the best movies ever made. An absolute masterpiece.”
Another fan gushed: “Tom Cruise crushed it, and you could tell he had a hand in the whole thing. The guy just operates on another level. What really got me was how real it all felt – the carrier shots, the jets, the story, the emotion, the twists, the humour, all of it.
“One of the best movies I’ve seen in the last thirty years, and it’s not even close. The cinematography is absolutely incredible, and the action makes the movie feel so real (I love the lack of CGI). Great nostalgia with original scenes and music from the first one. Actors and storyline were fantastic. I loved the original Top Gun, but every time I see Maverick, I think to myself, “this might actually be better,” another raved.
Top Gun: Maverick airs tonight (Saturday, January 10) on Channel 4 at 8pm.
