Airlines have warned passengers of potential disruption this weekend as Met Office issues yellow warnings for snow and ice across large parts of the UK
Airlines have alerted passengers to potential flight disruptions this weekend due to wintry weather conditions. This follows Storm Goretti’s onslaught on the UK with snow, hail, heavy rain and strong winds on Thursday and Friday.
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice across large swathes of the UK for Saturday, January 10. A snow and ice alert came into effect at midday on Friday and remains in place until 3pm today for Scotland, the North East, Yorkshire, and parts of the East Midlands and the North West.
An additional warning for ice was also issued for the South West, Wales, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, which is in effect until midday on Saturday. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland is under a yellow warning for rain from 9pm today until 9pm tomorrow.
More warnings have been issued for Sunday, including a yellow warning for snow and ice covering Scotland and the North, which also extends to the eastern half of Greater Manchester. It begins at 2am tomorrow morning and lasts until 3pm on Sunday.
Snow is expected to cause significant disruption in Scotland where both yellow and amber warnings are in force, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Passengers scheduled to fly in the coming days could experience some disruption due to the weather, both Jet2 and Ryanair have warned. Jet2 stated that it plans to operate flights as close to schedules as possible, but “there may be some disruption should the weather or the forecast deteriorate.”
The carrier said its operations teams are keeping a close eye on current and predicted weather conditions.
Jet2 has urged passengers to check in as planned and promised to contact them if their flight faces disruption.
It added: “We will, where possible, board all flights for an on-time departure, however, please be prepared for a longer than normal wait either in the terminal or onboard the aircraft to depart.”
The airline said it apologised in advance for any disruption.
Ryanair has also issued an update today.
The airline said: “Potential disruption to/from the UK (Saturday January 10) due to de-icing. Affected passengers will be notified and we encourage all passengers due to travel to/ from the UK to keep an eye on the Ryanair app for the latest updates.”
The weather chaos isn’t just wreaking havoc on UK flights, with temperatures plunging across mainland Europe too.
Storm Goretti has battered France and Germany with heavy snowfall and fierce winds, whilst Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has axed more than 3,200 flights since January 2 due to snowy conditions in the Netherlands, according to Flightradar24.com. In a statement on its website, the airport said:” In the past week we’ve been dealing with wintery weather conditions, which have caused cancellations and delays. Together with the airlines and all our other partners, we’re doing everything we can to help as many travellers as possible get on their way. Due to persistent winter weather, flights may be delayed this weekend.
“We are monitoring the weather forecasts and will adjust our advice accordingly. In addition, fewer trains will be running to and from Schiphol due to the adjusted NS timetable and railway works.”
