Not bad for a lad who was going to pie off acting classes – Owen Cooper has now made history after his incredible performance in the hit Netflix show
Owen Cooper has taken home his first ever Golden Globe for his breakout role in Netflix limited series Adolescence.
The Warrington teen Owen Cooper stormed Tinsel Town on Monday, Januuary 12, scooping his first ever gong and becoming the youngest winner in the ceremony’s history after landing Best Supporting Male Actor – Television for his role in the British-made hit show.
At just 16 years old, Cooper smashed a record that has stood since 2010, when Glee star Chris Colfer won the same prize at age 20.
Taking to the stage at the 83rd annual Golden Globes knees-up in Los Angeles, the fresh-faced Brit thanked his family, friends and castmates — before opening up about his incredible rise from total unknown to award-winner.
The teen revealed he’d never acted in anything before landing the role, admitting he forced himself into what he called “embarrassing” acting classes — where he was the only boy. But he stuck it out, took a gamble on himself, and on Monday night found himself standing on a Hollywood stage clutching one of the industry’s biggest prizes.
As the reality of the moment hit, Cooper paused mid-speech, his voice cracking with emotion. But instead of awkward silence, the ballroom erupted into applause as the industry rallied behind its newest — and youngest — star.
And it wasn’t an easy win. Cooper beat out some serious heavyweights, including co-star Ashley Walters for Adolescence, Billy Crudup for The Morning Show, Jason Isaac for The White Lotus, Tramell Tillman for Severance, and Walton Goggins for The White Lotus to take home the trophy.
The British-made Netflix hit Adolescence also cleaned up with nominations across the board, including nods for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Best Television Limited Series.
The win also makes Cooper the second-youngest male Golden Globe winner of all time — beaten only by Ricky Schroder, who won when he was only nine-years-old in 1980.
From a Warrington to Hollywood… not bad for a lad who almost didn’t go to his acting class.
