BBC The Traitors star Harriet Tyce has been open about her 34-year struggle with alcohol and how she shed four stone after giving up the bottle in 2022.

The acclaimed crime author and former barrister was ousted from the hit TV series on Wednesday night following a heated face-off with low-profile Traitor Rachel Duffy.

Despite Harriet’s conviction that Rachel was indeed a Traitor, the other contestants didn’t buy into the ex-lawyer’s theory.

Harriet leveraged her legal background to demonstrate her knack for spotting a Traitor, but confessed in a 2024 article for The Observer that she had been “a terrible barrister” due to her drinking problem.

The author also shares candidly about her recovery journey on Instagram, posting before-and-after photos since quitting alcohol.

Harriet put down the bottle on June 7, 2022, and wrote in her personal account of alcoholism: “I was systematically sabotaging myself, falling over in chambers in front of senior barristers and turning up late and hungover the next day.”

She continued: “I wasn’t sabotaging my work any more, and besides, I’d been a terrible barrister. Crime writing’s the sort of job you’d expect a drinker to do. But alcohol still took up too much space in my mind,” reports the Express.

She expressed her desire to take up yoga, weight lifting, running, and even “giving cold swimming a go”.

Harriet sees herself as a testament to the benefits of quitting alcohol, sharing a throwback photo with her followers and revealing her weight loss since ditching the booze.

In her article for The Observer, she further expressed: “I’m grateful on a daily basis that I’ve got out in time. Some days are harder – I miss the good time me that kept necking it down thinking I’d live forever, but I’m a lot happier now (and weigh 4 stone less, which is a lot easier on my ageing knees! ).”

Harriet has three published books under her belt, with her latest novel, Witch Trial, set to grace bookshelves this March.
