Michael McIntyre guest says ‘I’m struggling breathing’ before wowing with voice

Michael McIntyre’s Big Show aired an emotional Unexpected Star segment as aspiring singer Sam was surprised on stage before delivering an incredible Adele performance

Michael McIntyre’s Big Show delivered a tear-jerking Unexpected Star segment during Saturday night’s episode.

The popular BBC programme returned for its ninth series, featuring the beloved Unexpected Star section, where an unsuspecting member of the public is lured to the theatre under completely fabricated circumstances.

The chosen individual is then guided into a mock room that connects to the theatre stage, before either the fake walls collapse or they open a door to discover the packed audience. The surprise star then heads backstage to get ready for their major performance at the show’s climax.

Saturday’s programme introduced viewers to hopeful vocalist Sam, 44, who earns his living as a Quantity Surveyor in Torquay. Sam had been convinced he was embarking on a historical pub crawl around London alongside his closest friend Steve.

Yet this was all orchestrated as part of Michael’s elaborate setup for the Unexpected Star segment. Following celebrity encounters with the likes of Abbey Clancy and Peter Crouch at the initial pub, Sam was escorted to what he believed was the “smallest pub in London” – which was actually a constructed set positioned on stage, reports the Mirror.

Upon entering the supposed “smallest pub in London”, Sam was challenged to hit a bullseye with a dart to earn a complimentary drink. But when he launched the dart, the wall crumbled away, exposing him on the stage of Michael McIntyre’s Big Show before thousands of spectators.

Sam was rendered both stunned and emotional as he brushed away a tear, confessing he could hardly form a coherent sentence following the shock. The guest revealed: “Um, [I’m] overwhelmed…” prompting Michael to confess: “I’m so worried about you”, before noting: “We’ve yet to get an entire sentence.”

Michael then enquired: “Are you going to throw up?” with the anxious guest confessing: “I’m struggling breathing to be fair.”

The presenter then seated Sam down, encouraging him to take slow, deep breaths, asking: “Is that better?” to which Sam confessed: “No!”.

Michael then declared: “Okay. You’re going to take advantage of this incredible night because this is about giving you a special moment in your life.”

Subsequently, after regaining his composure and preparing himself, Sam made his way back onto the stage where he delivered a stunning rendition of Adele’s Easy on Me.

After his performance, Sam expressed: “I feel amazing, amazing, just thank you so much. To come and sing in a theatre like this, it’s like a lifelong dream. It’s been fantastic.”

Flocking to Twitter, now X, viewers were swift to commend the guest’s vocal abilities. One viewer exclaimed: “BLIMEY – unexpected star of the show #bigshow singing @Adele” with star eye emojis.

Another account posted: “WOWZERS! ! ! #Sam @McInTweet #BigShow What a voice! ! ! ! ! !” whilst a different fan commented: “hes got a voice wozers #Bigshow.”
