A Coronation Street star has issued a huge career update – but fans are worried it could mean they are leaving the cobbles
A Coronation Street favourite has delivered a major career announcement – but viewers suspect it could signal their departure from the cobbles.
Summer Spellman first graced the ITV soap in 2017, originally portrayed by Matilda Freeman. As the adopted daughter of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), Summer has found herself at the centre of numerous dramatic storylines.
Currently played by Harriet Bibby, the character has been devastated in recent weeks following Billy’s tragic demise.
The vicar met his end during the catastrophic multi-vehicle pile-up in the Corriedale episode, initially thought to be Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney) fault when it was actually caused by Carl (Jonathan Howard).
Following his death, a grief-stricken Summer has been battling to cope, unable to accept her father’s passing. This week, she even struck Debbie across the face after blaming her for Billy’s murder, reports the Mirror.
However, away from the soap drama, actress Harriet has recently announced some exciting career developments to her followers. Posting on her Instagram last Friday (January 16), Harriet disclosed she’s appearing in the acclaimed play, My Name Is Rachel Corrie.
The production draws entirely from a young American peace activist’s personal diaries and correspondence, with Take Back theatre and 53Two serving as co-producers. Harriet posted: “We’ve been working on something beautiful! @ijkershaw @takebacktheatre @53two @reddoormanagement. Ticket link in bio.”
Her Corrie colleagues were quick to express their support in the comments section. Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Habeeb, responded: “So excited for this my darling.”
Jane Hazlegrove, known for her role as Bernie Winger, wrote: “Now then… this will be fabulous..”
However, following the announcement of Harriet’s new venture, fans are speculating that she might be leaving Corrie. Responding to a Facebook post about her career update, one individual asked: “Is she leaving Corrie?”.
Another commented: “Hope she’s not leaving I will miss her. I like her character. Best of luck for the future.” A third fan wrote: “Don’t want to see her go! Love Summer.”
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
