EXCLUSIVE: Stars of hit drama Death In Paradise face an unusual danger when the film episodes in Guadeloupe in the Caribbean and it makes some of them scream in fear while filming
Death In Paradise stars risk real fatalities when they film the show thanks to a deadly bug.
Poisonous centipedes called scolopendras are regularly spotted on the set on Caribbean island Guadeloupe. Show regular Don Gilet, 59, told the Daily Star: “There is a bug were often see when we’re filming… a scolopendra. They have got venom and they kill.
“People have found them in their beds and in their shoes. I have seen a few of them already. I always do checks so I don’t get any surprises!”
The bugs regularly leave cast members screaming in fear. Don, who plays detective Mervin Wilson, added: “These things are venamous, so when we see one on set, people from the UK are running around like it’s Nosferatu chasing them.
“But the locals act like it’s just an ant. It’s great seeing the differences in how people react.”
Don insists he isn’t worried about being bitten by a scolopendra.
He said: “If the locals are not screaming about it, I will think, ‘They’re not that scary’.
“There’s a lot of wildlife around. We even filmed in a rainforest. But I’ve not come in contact with any wild beasts on set so far.”
Don isn’t bothered about being attacked by any animals, but he does struggle with the noises they make.
When he first joined the cast, he struggled to adjust to the climate.
He said: “I have an issue with how loud it gets at night. There’s quite a chorus going on with whistling frogs and cicadas. I’d rather they didn’t make so much noise!
“When I first got there I thought, ‘This isn’t going to work, I’m not going to sleep through this’.
“When I’m in the UK, I live a place where you can hear sirens all the time, so I can deal with noise normally. It’s just different.
“So it’s a matter of adjusting.”
The new series starts on January 30 at 9pm on BBC One.
