EastEnders fans are speculating that Sam Mitchell is on the brink of a new romantic storyline.

In December, Sam, portrayed by Kim Medcalf, made her return to Walford and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer after finding a lump in her breast. She’s now set to undergo a lumpectomy to remove the tumour, and her outlook appears promising.

During Tuesday’s episode of the BBC One soap (January 20), Ricky Branning, played by Frankie Day, threw a surprise birthday bash for Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) at the behest of Raymond. However, the festivities were marred by Ricky’s concern that his mum, Sam, was planning to leave Walford once more.

In truth, Sam had a hospital appointment lined up in preparation for her upcoming operation and has yet to disclose her breast cancer diagnosis to her son.

George Knight, played by Colin Salmon, discovered Sam alone in the Square’s gardens holding a letter about her lumpectomy, and he urged her to come clean to Ricky, reports OK!.

After taking George’s supportive advice on board, Sam returned home and finally revealed her diagnosis and impending surgery to Ricky, who pledged his support.

Later in the episode, Sam expressed her gratitude to George outside her house, but Nicola Mitchell, played by Laura Doddington, was watching the pair closely from a distance.

As viewers are aware, Nicola is expecting George’s child and seems to harbour romantic feelings for the ex-boxer. However, he was recently cautioned by her former brother-in-law, Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), to steer clear of Nicola.

George also maintains a close friendship with Sam’s brother, Phil, which means the duo already has a solid foundation. Could George become entangled with yet another Mitchell lady?

Several EastEnders enthusiasts believe he’s poised to capture Sam’s heart, potentially leaving Nicola seething.

One viewer posted on X: “Nicola and George = NO. Sam and George? … I could see it #EastEnders.”

Another questioned: “#EastEnders Who next George and Sam?” whilst a third observed: “Well, George clearly has a type. #EastEnders.”

“If George wasn’t with Nicola – I would actually ship him with Sam. They’d have good chemistry, and they actually shared really nice scenes today #EastEnders,” one fan commented.
