Carol Wright opened up on the Wright at Home podcast about her approach to being a mother-in-law to Michelle Keegan, saying she deliberately holds back
Mark Wright’s mum has revealed she frequently needs to “hold back” when it comes to daughter-in-law Michelle Keegan. Nevertheless, Carol maintains she’s far from the stereotypical wicked mother-in-law that some might imagine.
The former TOWIE matriarch opened up during the family’s podcast Wright at Home, discussing her bond with Michelle, who welcomed her first child this year. Daughter Jess Wright pressed her mum on the topic after reading out a listener’s letter, which stated: “Whenever my mother-in-law comes over, she acts like I stole her son.”
Carol, 63, didn’t hesitate to address the delicate subject, explaining: “It’s a hard one because everyone’s sons are like, you know, they’re your sons and… a woman comes along and they do take your son. But I’m a bit different because I actually hold back because of that reason.”
She continued: “I always think that when the girl comes into our family it’s quite they feel a bit overpowering to so many of us, so I seem to be like I hold back a bit.”
Jess then expressed her frustration when people label her as the “evil mother-in-law” because it’s completely inaccurate, reports the Mirror.
“It’s nothing like me, I’m totally the opposite,” Carol emphasised. “If I thought that my son was going to marry somebody that wasn’t right for them, and you knew they weren’t right for them, and you knew it was never going to last… Of course a mother-in-law should step in a little bit,” she continued.
“Because you don’t want them to be unhappy. You want them, once they get married, to be happy and stay married forever.”
Years earlier, when Carol was questioned about whether she instantly recognised that Michelle was right for her son, she responded: “Yes. She’s the perfect partner for Mark.”
In conversation with new! magazine, she added: “She’s just the girl next door. She’s so down to earth. She’s so much like Mark. They’re really similar and suited.”
It’s now been eight years since Carol and Jess departed TOWIE, closing the door on their reality television journey. However, whilst they acknowledge that filming was an “intense” experience, they maintain tremendous respect for the programme.
“None of us can look back and regret it because it’s why we are here today doing this type of work,” Carol told the Mirror before Christmas. “It all stems from being on the show.”
Jess added, “It was amazing. It was obviously a big shock factor when it first got released all those years ago. It was one of the first of its kind. Having been on TOWIE and let the viewers in, it was intense but amazing – and it’s still going. We can all look back on it with fond memories.”
