Beloved TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh demonstrated he can still get down on his knees during his New Year’s Day show, but joked he would “pay for that later” following his 2018 knee surgery
Alan Titchmarsh has shared a health update, nearly a decade after he was compelled to undergo knee surgery.
The cherished television presenter, 76, had an operation on his knees back in 2018 following damage accumulated from decades of crouching in gardens.
TV star Alan required the removal of damaged tissue and cartilage during the procedure. Speaking to The Mirror at the time, he revealed: “I had it all cleared out and they feel so much better.
“I’ve got bad knees as a result of a lot of kneeling over the years from gardening, and it has got a bit frayed in there, but I am a spring chicken again now.”
Recently, Alan provided a fresh update on his condition. On Thursday (January 1) the broadcaster returned to television for Love Your New Year’s Day with Alan Titchmarsh, reports the Mirror.
During a chat with guests Bonnie Langford and Gregor Fisher, the discussion shifted to the subject of getting older. Alan remarked: “Your age. You can’t fight that but at the same time, just being realistic as well as being adventurous in what you do, it’s a combination of the two.”
Gregor Fisher then said to Alan: “Embrace your age, it’s like you and your knees and dancing and all that kind of stuff.”
Alan responded: “I can still do this!” as he dropped down onto his knees before rising again with apparent ease. Bonnie exclaimed: “Oh very good!” However, in a rather poignant confession, Alan then quipped: “Ow I’ll pay for that later!” After undergoing surgery in 2018, Alan faced further health challenges when he broke his ankle during lockdown.
In a chat with Radio Times, he revealed that he had been keeping active by clocking up 26,000 steps a day and tending to his garden, until an unfortunate slip on wet grass.
“I broke my ankle at the beginning of September,” he confessed. “I slipped on wet grass and was on crutches for six weeks.”
Following his mishap, Alan expressed his frustration as the weight he had previously lost began to creep back on.
“It was very frustrating because you can’t even carry a cup of tea,” he continued. “I found having to rely on somebody else doing absolutely everything for me really hard I’m not a terribly good patient; I don’t do ill.”
