Calls for snap UK General Election as questions over Starmer’s future grows

Date:

The PM led his party to a 174-seat majority just 18 months ago, but there have been growing calls for him to step down and now a petition has called for him to call an election

Sir Keir Starmer faces fresh calls to step down as Prime Minister after thousands of Brits signed a petition calling for a snap general election.

The PM, who is facing growing speculation over his future from within his own party, has been urged to dissolve parliament by the petition, which has been signed by more than 49,000 people since it was created on December 29.

Creator Robert Barnes accused Sir Keir of “lying” to gain power and “betraying” pensioners and farmers, adding: “The people of our great country have had enough!”

He wrote on the petition: “On July 4 2024, Sir Keir Starmer was elected as Prime Minister. Since then, his Government has introduced measures that were not included in the Labour Party’s manifesto.

“We believe we were misled and the obfuscation has only got worse since Starmer took power. It is time for action.

“We believe the Government has failed to defend our borders from the small boats. We have no confidence in the way this Government has acted. Pensioners and farmers have been directly affected by policies that were not included in Labour’s manifesto.

“Our country cannot go on like this. Dissolve Parliament and call a General Election now!”

The beleagured Prime Minister promised 2026 will the year that life in Britain finally changes in a New Year address in which he acknowledged 2025 was tough for a lot of families.

He promised real change in energy bills, workers’ rights, public services and the levels of child poverty, adding: “There is a word we’ve forgotten in politics – hope. This is the year we can rediscover it – and look forward with confidence.”

Sir Keir had a tough 2025 which saw him battle dissent in his own party, lose his deputy Angela Rayner and saw his approval ratings drop to a record low just 18 months as support for the Greens and Reform UK soared.

A senior Labour source admitted to the BBC last month: “I wouldn’t insult your intelligence by trying to pretend campaigning to replace him isn’t going on.”

Sir Keir himself addressed the mounting speculation over his future before Christmas when he conceded: “It seems to be pretty rife!”

A previous petition calling for a snap election reached the 100,000 threshold to be debated in parliament. MPs will discuss the matter in Westminster Hall on January 12.
