Aimen Dean, who was once a member of Al-Qaeda but became a spy and worked for MI5 and MI6, has issued a stark warning to Europe over the potential for another major terrorist attack
A former Al-Qaeda member has warned that another terror attack comparable to 9/11 could strike at any moment.
Aimen Dean, who was once part of the terrorist organisation before becoming a double agent for MI5 and MI6, declared: “It’s not about if another 9/11 or 7/7 attack will happen, it’s about when.”
The September 11, 2001, suicide attacks in New York and Washington DC killed almost 3,000 people.
Fifty-two died when four suicide bombers struck London’s public transport network on July 7, 2005.
Speaking to The Sun, Dean argued that European concerns about Russia were misguided, insisting the greatest threat to the UK and Europe comes from Iran.
The former insider, calling on Britain to strengthen efforts against Islamic extremism, predicted more “lone wolves” would carry out operations for the Iranian regime, reports the Express.
MI6’s ex-spy within Al-Qaeda revealed there are hundreds of dormant operatives across the UK, cautioning that Islamic fundamentalism poses a more insidious danger by encouraging distrust of institutions.
He emphasised that violence represents “just the tip of the iceberg”.
Britain’s current terrorism threat level stands at “substantial”, indicating the Government considers an attack probable.
The most recent terror incident occurred when two men were killed and three wounded as British-Syrian Jihad Al-Shamie targeted Jewish worshippers during Yom Kippur at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester on October 2.
Al-Shamie was gunned down by police after lunging at officers wielding a knife with what appeared to be an explosive device fastened around his body.
According to MI5, Islamist terrorism represents the “most significant” terrorist threat facing the nation by sheer volume.
The intelligence service explains that Islamist extremists are typically motivated by a radical interpretation of Islam promoted by Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Additional threats stem from dissident republican factions in Northern Ireland, scattered networks of far-right extremists, and left-wing “single issue” or anarchist terror groups.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis revealed to Parliament in March that state threat investigations overseen by MI5 surged by 48% in the last 12 months.
He highlighted Iran’s escalation of direct action targeting UK interests in recent years, referencing MI5’s director general’s statement that Britain has thwarted 20 “potentially lethal” Iranian-backed conspiracies since 2022.
Pledging to combat such dangers, Mr Jarvis noted that the Islamic Republic’s regime has set its sights on journalists, media outlets, Jewish communities, and Israeli nationals.
Iranian Intelligence Services, encompassing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, orchestrate this “damaging” campaign.
However, Mr Jarvis explained that rather than operating directly on British soil, these organisations employ criminal intermediaries to execute their commands whilst concealing their involvement.
