Football fans have been told to ditch bad language after supporters found posters on their seats at one Football League game that urged fans to snitch on foul-mouthed fans
Football fans face having to clean up terrace chants after a club launched a ‘shop-a-yob’ scheme to red card bad language.
Away supporters arrived at Huddersfield Town’s Accu Stadium to find posters on their seats urging them to snitch on foul-mouthed fans. They were told to text the League One club’s officials to report anyone caught using ‘foul’, ‘abusive’ or ‘discriminatory’ language during matches.
According to the sign the aim was to make the game ‘enjoyable for all supporters’. But some fans moaned the rule would outlaw most terrace chants. It could also see supporters ejected for ranting about referees or VAR.
Supporters’ group The Away Fans posted a photo of the notice on X, saying: “Spotted at Huddersfield yesterday.
“More clubs are banning season ticket holders for ‘bad language’ whilst also asking people to report people who are committing these offences. Is that a bit over the top do you think?”
Angry fans branded the move ‘utter woke nonsense’ and a ‘complete over-reach’. One Liverpool fan said: “Football was lost years ago. Once a working man’s game, gone forever now. ‘Who’s the nasty man in the black?’. ‘That decision could impact my mental health’ blah, blah, blah.”
A Manchester City supporter said: “The game has gone for me. You can’t do anything at football anymore. It’s a passionate sport which is being taken away from us.”
While a Reading fan wrote: “So when they’ve silenced the fans we will be able to clearly hear all of the ‘fs’ and ‘cs’ from players, management and coaching staff!”
Another supporter said: “There’s always going to be foul & discriminatory language at a football match…that’s passionate support. It’s a football ground not a library or a church.”
One more said: “Swearing is part of football. Better let off some steam on the terraces than in other settings, so this definitely does not have a place in football. Not sure if the effort to PG-rate the stands is worse, or if encouraging snitching is the worst part of this. F****** s**** this!”
Another said: “This is way over the top. If it was racist or homophobic then that’s illegal already and rightly so. So what do they mean by ‘foul’. I could see some people reporting people just because they don’t like them.”
“Gentrification of football continues. They’ll not be happy until every ground is full of families & tourists wearing replica shirts and using their happy clappers,” said another.
A final of local rivals Bradford City joked: “Why are they rewarding him with a ban?”
The club had not responded to a request for comment.
