Russian state media broadcaster Vladimir Solovyov said that Moscow is delighted with how the meeting between Trump and Zelensky went and “everything was extremely precise”
Russian state media claimed a “knockout victory” over Ukraine following a meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky.
The talks at Trump’s Mar-a-lago club on Sunday aimed to flesh out the final stages of a Russian-Ukrainian peace deal almost four years after the conflict began. Trump and Zelensky seemed to reach a sticking point and the issue of land was raised.
“I think the land you’re talking about, some of that land has been taken,” Trump said.
“Some of that land is maybe up for grabs, but it may be taken over the next period of a number of months, and you’re better off making a deal.”
The US’s sympathy towards Russia seems to be taken as a victory in Moscow.
State media labelled the summit as a win for Putin, with broadcaster Vladimir Solovyov saying that Moscow is delighted with how the meeting went.
He claimed it was all part of his country’s plan, speaking on his evening show.
“We have achieved a knockout victory, we prepared on a grandmaster’s level on all the main points and it worked.”
“Everything was extremely precise, and of course Zelensky started to melt, he melted down.”
Solovyov claimed that a call between Washington and Moscow occurred shortly before Zelensky landed, which “completely destroyed Zelensky’s plans”.
The broadcaster’s statements provide insight into the optimism within the Kremlin that this deal be useful to Russia, but needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Yuriy Boyechko, CEO and founder of Hope for Ukraine, a non-profit that delivers humanitarian aid to war-torn Ukrainians, raised concerns over Trump’s approach.
“This treats Putin as a co-partner whose approval is needed, signalling to Kyiv that peace will come on Moscow’s terms – not international law,” Boyechko said.
Concerns rose at the joint press conference. Trump said Putin “wants to see the war end” and was “very generous” towards Ukraine succeeding. The US President even pledged Russian help with reconstruction via cheap energy and electricity.
This is not the first time tensions sparked between Trump and Zelensky. The pair had a public spat in the Oval Office in February when the Ukrainian leader joined Trump and US Vice-President JD Vance to sign a deal on sharing his country’s mineral resources.
Trump said he was being “disrespectful” for pushing for security guarantees and Zelensky left empty-handed.
